Bathroom Lighting: Different Areas Of Protection
In bathroom lighting, several aspects are to be studied. First, make sure to install your fixtures in a moisture-resistant area.
Any direct contact with water should also be avoided – unless you opt for equipment with an adequate degree of protection.
In case of improper use and excess humidity, our LED luminaires may stop working or malfunction.
This article is to let you know the specific protection zones for bathrooms, and the types of products adapted to each of them.
To begin, you should know that in bathroom lighting, 4 zones of protection are to distinguish the different IP zones:
Zone 1 – Z1: When we speak of “zone 1” of a bathroom, we usually refer to the ceiling. Recessed LED luminaires or ceiling lights can be used. It is recommended that you opt for products with IP44 protection at a minimum. Although your fixture is not in direct contact with water, the vapor will condense on it – especially in cold weather.
Zone 2 – Z2: Zone 2 has many similarities with Zone 1, except that it is more specifically the walls of the bathroom. It is used in the same way, although there is no direct contact with water. This area is affected by vapor condensation. We, therefore, recommend IP44 protection. The mirrors of the adapted sconces will be perfect. Zone 3 – Z3: Zone 3 corresponds to the area around the bath or shower: condensation of water vapor is more important, and there may be splashing. This is why we will opt for luminaires displaying at least IP65 protection. To guarantee their proper functioning even in the event of splashing water.
Zone 4 – Z4: This is the wettest area of the bathroom. Namely, the bath or the shower, where the LED light is in direct contact with the water. For this reason, it is impoortant to opt for the highest sealing index. To ensure proper operation, products intended to illuminate this area must have IP67 protection.
